Today it became known that the Latvian national team will not call up players from the KHL to the 2023 Ice Hockey World Championship, which will be held in Finland and Latvia. The decision was made by the team's coaching staff after a thorough analysis of the capabilities and composition of the players.
Although some players from the KHL, such as Kalnins and Eliseev, had previously played for the Latvian national team, the new approach of the coaching staff caused controversy in the community. However, the Latvian organizers emphasized that this decision was made in order to increase the competitiveness of the Latvian national team and increase its chances of success in the tournament.
The Ice Hockey World Championship 2023 will start on May 12, and the Latvian national team will play in Group B, along with Canada, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Norway, Kazakhstan and Slovenia.
